Free online metronome with time signatures and visual pulse

grooph is a free metronome that runs in your browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Pick a tempo, pick a time signature and press play. The first beat of every measure sounds higher than the others, so you always know where "one" is.

▶ Open the metronome at 100 BPM in 4/4

How to use it

  1. Set the tempo. Drag the BPM field left or right, or click it and type a number. Any tempo from 20 to 300 beats per minute works.
  2. Choose a time signature. Open the editor (pen icon) and use the time signature button (it shows the current meter, e.g. "4/4"). You can use 1 to 17 beats over a quarter, eighth or sixteenth note, so 3/4, 6/8, 7/8 and 12/8 are all possible.
  3. Press play (or the space bar). A moving cursor shows where you are in the measure.
  4. Optional: switch on the count-in (the button next to play) to hear one bar of clicks before the music starts, or add a swing feel next to the tempo.

On phones and tablets the screen stays awake while the metronome is playing.

Ready-made settings

These links open grooph with the tempo and meter already set:

▶ 60 BPM in 4/4 – slow practice

▶ 120 BPM in 3/4 – waltz

▶ 90 BPM in 6/8

▶ 140 BPM in 7/8

More meters such as 5/4, 5/8 and 7/8 are explained on the page about odd time signatures.

More than a click

A plain click only marks the beats. grooph can also play a rhythm: write notes and rests in standard notation, including triplets and other tuplets, and the metronome plays exactly that pattern. This is useful when you want to hear how a figure from your sheet music should sound.

Son clave (3-2) ▶ Play in grooph at 100 BPM

If you would rather read something new every time, the rhythm generator writes random exercises for sight-reading.
